The star has given the complete sum of his twenty-five thousand pound Mercury Prize winnings to the MVT, which works to save the Britain's small live music spots.

He was awarded the prize on mid-October as his new release his work was declared the top album of the last 12 months.

He has chosen to hand the money over to the trust, in acknowledgment of the crucial part small stages played in his initial steps.

"I wouldn't be doing this success if it weren't for all the shows I performed around the region, and elsewhere, when I was starting out," remarked Fender. "These spaces are renowned, but they are in difficulty."

Beginning in 2023, more than 150 of these locations have ceased operations – approximately 16% of the total UK scene.

In the last year, well-known musicians including Pulp, the group Coldplay, the singer Katy Perry and Sheeran have all aided the Music Venues Trust in its efforts to support the industry, by including a modest fee to their admission fees, which goes to help independent venues.

He also joined in, generating more than £100,000 on his 2024 arena tour to support thirty-eight small stages across England, Scotland, and Wales.

The money supported locations that were facing potential shutdown due to difficulties caused by floods, fire incidents and family tragedies, as well as regulatory hurdles, conflicts and noise complaints.

Other venues were granted financial assistance in modernizing infrastructure and sound and lighting systems that directly benefitted musicians and concertgoers.

"The idea that funds from performances in major spaces helps the independent spots, where it kicks off for artists like me, is just common sense," Fender has stated.

He is among several artists to contribute his Mercury Prize funds to good deeds.

Back when Pulp won the trophy in 1996 for their record their work, frontman Cocker declared that the act would contribute their prize money to the charity War Child.

That year, rapper and singer she shared her bounty between a few charities, including the NSPCC and a charity for Sickle Cell.

"And I donated a thousand pounds to the center, to their classes, because I did gymnastics when I was growing up and they required new equipment," the artist told a publication.

In recent years, they donated their prize money to the local youth club that supported their band, as well as other local music groups.

And the 1994 recipients M People donated their award to a multiple sclerosis charity after a close contact was found to have the illness.

"The victory was quite enough," said vocalist Small. "The prize was the cherry on top but we could do without the bonus, because we had the cake. So our winning impacted another person's life."

Last week, the Music Venues Trust announced it had saved a couple of small stages in that region, by transferring them to local control.

The Joiners in that area and the other in Bristol were bought under the Own Our Venues program, which is funded by a national body and enthusiasts who acquire "stakes" in the properties.
