Crawley Claims Ignorance of Captain Stokes' Provocative 'Weak Men' Comments

England opener Zak Crawley suggested he was not familiar with statements made by skipper Ben Stokes regarding the dressing room as no place for "those lacking fortitude".

Stokes delivered this message in multiple conversations following England's defeat in the second Ashes series against Australia previously.

Ahead of the third Test, where the visitors are staring at a series loss at the earliest opportunity, the captain stated he had let his message to "drift around" within the playing group.

"I have completed all the talking in recent days that I required," said Stokes.

However, after Crawley made a knock of 85 on the penultimate day in the third Test, he stated: "I missed those remarks."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. Our approach is to take anything stated in the press with a pinch of salt," he added.

Raw Conversations and Steady Philosophy

Stokes issued his "weak men" comment subsequent to his side were beaten in Brisbane to fall 2-0 down.

The team afterwards took a holiday to Noosa between the second and third Tests.

Prior to this match, he said his players had held "raw" conversations and he had asked them to "show a bit of dog" in their effort to remain alive in the Ashes battle.

Nevertheless, the Kent batsman stated the guidance from Stokes and coach Brendon McCullum had remained consistent with their previous tenure in charge.

"It's been very positive, unchanged," said the opener. "The focus is just trying to be optimistic, playing our brand, with great liberty. We believed we could do something special going into this Test."

The Hosts Close of Rapid Ashes Triumph

The opener's wicket late on Saturday came during a crucial three-wicket burst by Australian off-spinner Lyon.

The spinner's triple strike in 20 deliveries – he also bowled Harry Brook and Ben Stokes – left the chasing side 207-6 in pursuit of a daunting target of 435.

This means, Australia require just four more wickets on Sunday's last day to move to an unassailable three-nil lead after three Tests.

Defeat would prolong England's winless run in this country to 18 consecutive matches and ensure a fourth straight overseas Ashes series defeat.

The current battle will be completed in just eleven days of play – with England fell the first two Tests in rapid time each.

Not since 1921, when Australia completed victory in England in eight days, has the outcome of the urn been determined more swiftly. Australia have also won in eleven days on two other instances in the modern era.

"This is disheartening," admitted the batsman. "We came here to regain the Ashes and we're facing elimination at this point."

"There will still be plenty to play for and we'll certainly approach it with that mindset," Crawley added.

"It's been tough. Australia is a very, very good side. It was always going to be tough coming here to face them. They entered as the front-runners and have demonstrated their quality."

Pope's Place Under Scrutiny

Although the opener's innings in Adelaide likely secures doubts about his short-term place in the side, Pope appears under threat for his spot in the fourth Test starting December 26th.

Pope was out for 17 in the team's second innings on Saturday, adding to his poor record versus Australia.

In 16 Ashes innings, Pope has failed to score a fifty and boasts an average of 17.62.

A solitary other English batsman in over a century – Dennis Amiss – has played as many times in the top six in the Ashes and recorded a lower average.

But, the opener insisted any suggestion Pope is under the microscope comes from "the media" – referring to the journalists – "not inside the camp."

"The squad is fully aware of his considerable talent," said he. "Ollie has enjoyed a good year if I'm honest."

"He has produced several excellent innings. This is noise from the outside. There is no chat of that nature on Ollie amongst the players," he finished.
