British Air Force Typhoon jets have conducted a mission with French aircraft in a coordinated attack targeting an hidden munitions depot in Syria employed by the Islamic State group (IS), per a report from the UK's MoD.

The location, identified by reconnaissance, was believed to be containing munitions and bombs, the announcement noted, and was positioned in mountainous terrain just above the ancient city of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"Our aircraft employed laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to strike a number of approach shafts down to the site... initial indications suggest the objective was successfully hit," the MoD said.

There was no indication of any harm to civilians in the strike on Saturday evening and all the aircraft made a safe return, the defence officials confirmed.

The Typhoon FGR4s were supported by a Voyager tanker plane.

Daesh - referred to as Daesh - established jihadist rule over large swathes of Syria and Iraq before its territorial defeat in 2019.

"This operation shows our UK leadership, and resolve to stand shoulder to shoulder with allied nations, to eliminate any re-emergence of Daesh and their violent and radical beliefs in the area," the British Defence Secretary the minister remarked.

UK warplanes have conducted surveillance missions over Syrian airspace to "forestall any attempted comeback" of Islamic State following its military defeat at the battle of Baghuz in the year 2019, the MoD reported.

"I want to thank the personnel of our armed forces involved in this operation for their expertise and their valour," Healey said. "They were part of a great many British troops deployed over the festive period. This mission, to remove terrorist threats who pose a risk to our way of life, shows how British military are always on standby, throughout the year, protecting the UK within its borders and powerful internationally."

During December, the US military executed what it called a "massive strike" targeting Islamic State objectives in Syria, following an assault resulted in the deaths of two US servicemembers and a civilian interpreter in Palmyra.

The United Nations reports IS still has between 5,000 and 7,000 combatants in both countries.
